Applied Biology 1-2

PREREQUISITES: This course is designed for those students who have not been successful in other science courses offered in our department. It is not a course for freshmen students.
Applied Biology surveys Biology through its application, which includes Agriculture, Environmental Science, and Medicine. Traditional biological disciplines that are covered through these applied units include Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Evolution, and Physiology. The increasingly global impacts and ethics of each application are considered.
IB Biology HL
GRADE: 11-12 CREDITS: 5 per semester (two year course) College Recommended? Yes
PREREQUISITES: This course is designed for those students pursuing the international baccalaureate diploma or certificate. It is expected that students enrolled in this class will take the IB Biology Exam in May of their examination year. It is required that students have completed one year of Chemistry before entering this course.
IB Biology is a two-year course that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills. There is an emphasis on open-ended laboratory investigations that the students design themselves. The course will include topics in Cells, Genetics, Ecology, Human Physiology, Plant Physiology, Evolution and Biotechnology.
Chemistry 1-2
GRADE: 10, 11 CREDITS: 5 per semester
PREREQUISITES: Physics 1-2; Algebra concurrently
The course is composed of the following topics. Measurement and calculations; Matter and Change; Atomic Theory; Periodic Law; Bonding; Formula and Equation Writing; Stoichiometry; Gas Laws; Solutions; Kinetics, Equilibrium; Acids/Bases; Oxidation-Reduction.
Scientific skill include using and applying scientific measuring instruments, conducting investigations, including collecting, organizing and analyzing data and implementation of informational research.
IB Chemistry SL

PREREQUISITES: This course is designed for those students pursing the international baccalaureate diploma or certificate.
Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills. It is called the central science as chemical principles underpin both the physical environment in which we live and all biological systems. The course will include topics in Stoichiometry, Atomic Theory, Periodicity, Bonding , States of Matter, Energetics, Kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Oxidation and Reduction and Organic Chemistry. It is recommended that students have completed one year of Chemistry before entering this course

GRADE: 11-12 CREDITS: 5 per semester
PREREQUISITES: This course is designed for juniors and seniors who have struggled with science classes and need to complete their Life Science graduation requirements. It is recommended that students have completed Integrated Science 1-2 before entering this course.
Integrated Science 3-4 is an academic course that focuses on Global Systems like Weather, Carbon Cycle, Climate Change, and the Earth’s place in the Solar System the first semester. Second semester includes topics in Cell Biology, Genetics, and Human Physiology.
IB Biology SL/HL 3-4 College Recommended? Yes
GRADE: 12 CREDITS: 10 per semester PREREQUISITES: IB Biology 1-2
IB Biology HL and SL 3-4 is equivalent to a college level course in Biology. It is a continuation of the IB Bioloofy HL/SL course for juniors. The students are expected to sit for the HL or SL Biology exam in May which may earn them college credits if they receive a passing score on the exam.
